AVG upgrade

I have 2 problems which may or may not be Vista-related:

Free AVG users have to upgrade to Ver. 8. I have tried twice yesterday.
1st time received 17.4MB
2nd time received 23.8MB
Same message for both: Some of the files are corrupted. Please download a
new copy. What is going on. Must I first remove the existing Ver. 7.5?

My Windows Live Mail doesn't shut down properly when I close it to shut
down. Then I receive one or more drafts when I log in again. The envelope
on the left bottom of the screen disappears, but the one on the right bottom
of the screen remains. I have tried closing it manually, but it doesn't
solve the problem. This happens intermittently.

Hope you can help.

I installed AVG 8 without a problem, the install routine should uninstall
AVG 7.5
As I remember, my download was about 45MB.

Sound like your not getting the complete download.
Try downloading from here :
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition#tba2

Click on the " continue to AVG free download" button.

You do not need to uninstall 7.5 , the version 8 install routine will
examine your system, and remove 7.5 prior to installing 8.

I did this yesterday morning, so far without issue.

Hope this helps,

I am now trying to download it for the 3rd time. I have the same problem
about files being corrupted.

If you ever get a good download, my advice is to uninstall the old
version first. Many have reported no problems without doing the
uninstall, but others, including myself, have had more success by
unisntalling the old version first.

I hope you're right "Glatzfront"! I have just tried for the 3rd time - and
thought I was succeeding - but received 40.2MB this time and the same
message, viz "Some installation files are corrupt. Please download a fresh
copy and retry the installation". At this rate, maybe I'll succeed as each
time it gets a bit better, but who can throw away megs for nothing!

I was wondering if having AVG Anti-Rootkit attached to my AVG Anti-Spyware
had anything to do with it?

I didn't want to uninstall the 7.5 AVG as I may have the same problem again,
if it is actually AVG's problem.

What about looking at Avast as an alternative?

I am glad it's not only me, floundering in deep XXX!

I hope you are not trying to "Run" from the download.
This causes many problems.
Do a "SAVE" option, saving the file to the hard drive first.
Then do the installation from the saved file.

AVG 8.0 has gone the way of McAfee, ZoneAlarm and Norton. It has become
a bloated resource hog that attempts to do everything and it doesn't do it
very well. It conflicts with many AS programs and some of it's functions do
not work with Vista.
I upgraded from the paid version of AVG 7.5 AS to 8.0 AV and it didn't
take me long to uninstall it. The AVG AV 8.0 also includes the AVG AS. AVG
AS will no longer be offered as a standalone AS program. Sadly, AVG has
taken a step backwards and I can no longer recommend it for use as I did in
the past.
The recommendation of AVG is to uninstall "ALL" your AS programs and
use AVG 8.0 only. This means you cannot use SpywareBlaster, Spybot S&D and
some other AS programs, especially when using the immunization features. In
my opinion this is a self-serving solution to the problems caused by AVG 8.0
and a very poor solution at that.
I reinstalled my NOD32 and as always, it works perfectly causing no
conflicts with my AS programs. If you wish to use a free AV program I would
suggest Avast.

Thanks so much all of you. I really appreciate your input. I will change
to Avast before next weekend and I'm sure many others will too! Too bad AVG
shot themselves in the foot.

I totally agree CB. I got rid of AVG several months back after using it for
years and sadly it has became like many others. It's a shame such great
programs that these companies put so much work into to prefect them then go
louse them up by adding all this unnecessary junk. Right now I use Avast and
so far it seems to be a very good Antivirus program, but no doubt in time
they will follow others and try to make that extra dollar and screw it up as
well.

Someone at HardOCP suggested Avira as a good replacement for AVG 8.x. I
installed it last night on XP and it is very light on resources. That
person claimed it has better detection of virri than AVG too but I can't
confirm that. I like it and will dump AVG from my Vista PC later today and
put Avira on it too. Check it out.

I'm now have Avast installed on XP Pro and Vista Premium, so far I like
it. I want to find something for when AVG 7.5 isn't updated, to be
ready. Can't use version 8 as I use Spywareblaster's and Spybot's
immunization.
That doesn't stop you from using AVG8. AVG8 just detects the immunizations
in the registry as possible spyware/adware. You just ignore it and let it
be. You should never set any AV to auto-heal anyway because they too often
find false-positives. AVG8 gave me a false-positive on a .dll file that I
have been using for a long time so know it is safe. If I had auto-heal on
it would have moved it the qyuarantine section but because I tell it to
report only I can detemine what gets moved to quarantine and what doesn't.
That's the only way to safely use any AV product.

The free version of AVAST will not let you schedule updates. You will have to do that manually
every day, be aware.
I also have not found how to schedule, or when it does it's scan.
You have to have the Pro version to do scheduling. The Pro version costs.

I have seen many posts recommending Antivir and I have seen no posts
stating bad things about it. I researched Antivir but never tried it as I
currently use NOD32 and am very happy with it.
I will try Antivir when the NOD32 expires next year.

It's happened to me more than once from grisoft. Keep trying.
