AVG Sucks.

I am sick and tired of you peole telling that AVG is a good AV
software...it is NOT.


AVG sucks. Big Time.

the program is buggy...the update servers are slow...and also many good
files are being considered viruses. Don't even get me started upon
detection of trojans..spyware or worms....

AVG realy means All Virusses Granted..........

The german Antivir is far more better,superiour in all ways...seriously.
And NO I am NOT a fud...nore being paid by Antivir company. IF you want
to use a free AV program try this.

If your on-Acces scanner is working properly (ie NOT AVG Mickey Mouse
crap)all malicious files will be recognized before opening the email file.

I've had 0 problems or viruses with my AVG. I've only been using it a
few weeks, but so far, so good.

Same here, never had a problem with AVG 7.0 free edition.

About the free use of these 3 antivirus solutions.
Avast shows in trustworthy test allover to be roundabout 99% effective
against known virusses, while both AVG & Antivir are practically 100%
effective. The difference is minimal. AVG offers automated upgrades
and has an emailscanner - what you do need imho. If you do not mind
upgrading manually every day, Antivir is a perfect solution.
Personally i've tried all 3 the last couple of months and AVG is what
I have installed at the time. And I'm happy about it. If you prefer
Antivir, that's fine. I advice all 3 solutions as a good free
solution. AVG does a good job. Perhaps your configuration has a
problem with it. bad luck, but not bad soft.

Hi,

Like said before I realy dont like a AV without a mail scanner and
dont see how an "on access scanner" can work to protect you or clean
infected mail.

Most of all I have been useing AVG for a long time and its been very
good to me and doing a good job too!

AntiVir has an Internet Update function.
With some programming (maybe a little difficult to find),
you can schedule (automate) all updates you require.

I have used AntiVir for some time, when my Norton AV seemed to
malfunction.
Thanks to this group (and the neighbours) I switched to NOD32,
I removed Norton AV and I do no longer require AntiVir.
So yes, there is an Internet Update function available in AntiVir.

on a mail server it's not really any help, but on the client side the
on-access scanner will detect the virus when the email program accesses
the email carrying the malware... there's no sense in 'clean'ing
so-called infected mail since mail cannot be infected... it is simply a
container and in the case of an email worm the container holds the email
worm... you recover from that state by deleting the email in question...

NAV used a proxy server and would prevent infected E-mail from being
D/L. I would receive a message telling me how many E-mails were blocked
or cleaned. This worked well a few years ago when we were getting hit
with mass E-mail attacks before ISPs took control. That's the reason I
kept NAV on my E-mail PC until I switched to NOD32 last fall.

BTW, I've only had 2 viruses since I started using PC in 1994. In 1995,
2 weeks after MS announced Macro Viruses, I found that I was infected
with 2 of them. That's when I got interested in AV. I had MSAV, Central
Point AV, NAV and McAfees running on Win3.x and none of them detected
the new Macro Viruses. I switched to Dr. Solomons and used it as my
mainline defense until the bitter end.

My AV software has blocked a lot of viruses but mostly on floppies in
the past. For a few years, one of my client's was always sending me
Macro infected Excel files. They used Norton Enterprise Edition and she
was always getting something.

Most of the problems that I've encountered in the past 5 years have been
non-viral malware attacks. Some of which were fixed with MS updates and
others with SpyBot and AdAware. NOD32 has done a very good job of
alerting me when I encounter some malware on the net.

An opdate function should be installed automatically and work without
programming to make AntiVir preferable over AVG.
The advantage of AntiVir however is that it's extremely light on
resources. Can you show/explain how to auto-update AntiVir? I would
like to try it & ad that info to my website.

Please try the follwing instructions:

A. AntiVir
1. start AntiVir via the Start menu
2. Options/Configuration/Internet Updater
3. tick "Allow automatic internet update downloads" (default?)
4. OK
5. close AntiVir

B. AntiVir Scheduler
1. start AntiVir Scheduler via the Start menu
2. click on "Insert" (blue cross)
3. click on tab "Internet Update"
4. click on button "Schedule"

an example for how to program:
5. Frequency: "Daily" or "Workday"
6. Time: set to 10:00 or 11:00 or 12:00 or ...............
(click on hours and minutes seperately)
7. OK
8. OK
Repeat this procedure for every time you want the program to check for
updates.
On the scheduled time AntiVir requests permission to check for updates.

I have now a schedule made for 09:59, 10:59, .......... 23:59,
alternating Workday and Daily (= including Saturday and Sunday).
That provides an hourly check for updates (usually twice per day).

Because I have NOD32 installed as my prime AV program,
I have AntiVir Guard deactivated, but AntiVir is now available
as a "second opinion" scanner.

I will keep AntiVir installed for some weeks,
just in case you have more questions.

Based on... Yes. But not the same as.

Free versions are usually one (or more) of three types:

- A beta version - the users are in essence the final testers.
- An older version - yes, the latest virus profiles, but potentially a step
behind in other departments.
- A crippled version - nuff said.

So although performance will tend to be similar, it will also tend to be
slightly different as well!

Quite enough to demonstrate your competence. AVG is well regarded, widely
used and effective. Go ask in the NG microsoft.public.security
