What is the last ver of Norton AV for Win98?

I run Windows98SE. I'm tired of all these free AV programs that no
longer support Win98se. I was running AVG until it just puked out and
would not get updates, and said something about no longer supporting
98. I've decided to just buy a used copy of Norton AV on Amazon or
some other place. What is the last version that supports Win98se?
I'm sure their newest ones dont.

Someone said they have Norton AV 5 and would sell it cheap, but they
said they think thats for Win95? When I looked on some website it
listed them by year from 2002 to 2008 or something like that. Unless
version 5 is from 2005????

Anyone know?

And if I was to buy one of these older ones, does NAV still furnish
the definition files?

Dont waste your time to tell me to upgrade to XP, I'm perfectly happy
with Win98. It's just some of the support for software that sucks
these days.

Thanks

Use Norton AV 2002 (buy or borrow).
Daily updates from Symantec are accepted by Norton AV 2002.
(at least till some months ago.)

If you have no objection to pay, look at NOD32.
Version 2.7 is available and has a version for Win95/98/ME.

Try Avast Home first. It's excellent and runs on Win98.

I also use NAV 2002 on my win-98 systems.

Norton 2002 (aka NAV 2002) can be found as a separate CD, or as part of
Norton System Works 2002 (NSW 2002).

NAV 2002 is different than newer versions because it's very trivial to
re-enable it for a year for it to continue to install new virus
definition files. When you install NAV 2002 for the first time, it will
accept new virus definition files for a year. When the year is over,
simply uninstall the product and delete all traces of it. The important
thing do so is to delete the file "catalog.livesubscribe". Normally
that file is not deleted when you uninstall the program. Once you do
that, you'll be able to re-install it and use it freely for another
year.

I've read of some situations where a suitably hacked version of the file
has pushed the expiry date a hundred years into the future.

Regarding automatic updating of NAV 2002, it's been my experience that
the manual "check for updates" function from within NAV 2002 hasn't
worked for about the past 2 years (this on both win-98se and win-XP
systems that haven't hit their expiry date).

That can be easily overcome simply by downloading and running the
intelligent updater file from Symantec. There is a daily updater file
available as well as a weekly file.

Finally, some will say that an old AV program is no good if the scan
engine is also old. The answer is that Symantec provides new scan
engine .DLL's with each set of virus definition files, even for NAV
2002, and they are automatically installed with the intelligent updater
file.

Another alternative is Symantec Corporate AntiVirus. A relatively
recent version (9 or 10) still works on win-98. Symantec Corporate AV
does not have a built-in expiry date.

If you can't find NAV 2002 or NSW 2002 on a torrent, post back here -
maybe I'll put my copy up.

I was using NAV 5 on W98 just fine - didn't have SE though. I could
still get updates for definitions files but not for program updates, so
I eventually went with AVG because program updates are more important
IMO than just virus definition files.
And if I was to buy one of these older ones, does NAV still furnish
the definition files?

One poster (Virus Guy IIRC) did some research and insists that NAV2002
was still getting *both* definitions and program updates after repeated
reinstalls to extend its subscription life.

It gets worse.

As of May 10th, NAV 2002 (and also NAV 2003 I think) can no longer be
updated with new virus definition files; the problem is related to the ever
increasing size of the files, and effectively means the end of usefulness of
NAV 2002.
More info on the Symantec NAV forum.
