For comparison, upon the completion I initiated new scan and it took much
longer. Why.

Did you release the tmp files the AVG scan generated the first time or you just left
them and started your new scan again. Those tmp files usually stay around for a
while after a scan until you delete them manually right after the scan or it can
take up to 10-15 minutes before the scanning engine releases them. In my case it
takes about 12 minutes here on a corporate AV engine

No I did not nor I know how. How does their presence increase the scan time
by tenfold?

Empty your *.tmp folder. Then Run the Scan and while running take a peek into that
tmp folder that you emptied. You will see the tmp files that were created by the
scanner when running. When the scanning finishes open the tmp folder again and you
will see those files are still there. Then after 5,10,15 minutes go and see if they
are still there. You can figure out how long it takes for the scanning engine to
disconnect and you can adjust your repeat scanning accordingly or delete those tmp
files after the original scan finished.
