How does the free AVG antivrus program compare
to other" pay-for" antivirus programs?

The majority of the evidence I've read in support of AVG's effectiveness is
anecdotal. People install the software, it doesn't screw up their system,
and it displays evidence of detecting viruses. So that must mean it works
well.

Or else the software detects a virus that was detected by the neighbor's
$50 AV so it must be as good as theirs, right?

But wait, it's certified. It must be good. Well, any kind of
certification means that a minumum set of requirements was satisfied. It's
like looking at two potential employees and seeing that they both graduated
from MIT. One is willing to work for $20,000 less than the other. So hire
the cheap guy, right? Never mind the fact that he got all D's in the
subjects that are most important to your company and that the other person
got straight A's across the board. They both qualified for graduation
after all.

I didn't get very warm, fuzzy feelings about the software from these links:

I could be wrong about AVG. Maybe it really is a great product. I just
hate all the blind trumpet blowing about the product.
