AVG email scanner pops up even when not collecting mail.

Why does the AVG email scanner attempt to connect to an IP address even when
I'm not collecting mail?

Only done it once, but a little worrying all the same.

It is not doing it for you. It is doing it for itself. I have extra major
questions about it's embedded email client. It is named
Cyrus SASL 2.1.13 and so far as I can tell so far is a redhat product.

It is either creating or disclosing the creation and sending of authorless
emails within itself. (that is, a blank FROM field, not the complete header
which includes a my address as a "from")

The logs are usually named "emc" or 'emc-##' and on my machine are under
WINDOWS/Application Data/AVG7/Log/.

My question is: is it a security hole within the product or is the product
itself doing it?

Maybe someone here knows all about it.

I know AVG7 E-mail scanner doesn't like working with MailWasher... AVG6
worked fine with Mailwasher and OE, but now Mailwasher just keeps getting
connection errors and AVG7 bounces the bounced e-mails back at me!

Grrr - about to uninstall ver7 - anyone got any suggestions on good free AV
software to take its place?

Hi,

I know AVG7 E-mail scanner doesn't like working with MailWasher... AVG6
worked fine with Mailwasher and OE, but now Mailwasher just keeps getting
connection errors and AVG7 bounces the bounced e-mails back at me!

Yet another reason to stop bouncing Email, which is of not much use
anyway.

So which is better, Avast or 'AntiVir' from free-av.com? I've heard that
Avast tends to slow the system down, true or not?

What is Avast like for e-mail scanning?

Please enlighten this mis-guided mis-informed peasant!!

TIA

I must be doing something wrong. I read all these messages about this not
working with that etc, and find that I have some of them on my PC.

ALL are working together without any problems, so is it me and my system or
you and yours.

I have AVG7 and Mailwasher running together.
PrevX, Spybot S+D,SpywareBlaster,CCleaner,MRUBlaster and SpywareGuared all
used as on demand scanners.

Oh yes, Win XPHE SP2,

Ahh, the mysteries of the PC.

Mines running OK with Mailwasher, maybe one of your settings is wrong.

No, Grisift tell you that AVG7 wont work with Mailwasher if e-mail scanning
is active AND Mailwasher tries to bounce mail back to a non-existent
server.. Where Mailwasher ignores the return errors AVG7 doesn't -
sometimes it just results in error messages about delivery probs, other
times it causes more probes (luck of the draw I guess?)

Anyway - the other e-mail scanning issues seem to have been solved by a
Grisoft update, so losing Mailwasher is a small compromise...

Cheers

You should never bounce mail, it just adds an extra load of cr=p to the
internet, and I see from above from AVG that AVG7 won't work if e-mail
scanning AND bounce are selected. So untick the bounce feature and it
should work OK, mine does.
