this is to inform those who have posted so many times about Grisoft's AVG
free v7.1 the company is working on getting a release out for Vista but its
still in beta but as far as testing it the v7.5 beta works fine under Vista
but can not say when this version will be released and if it will be either
free or not.

I tired it in build 5728. It only works properly with UAC turned off here.

I installed this beta version a coupleof days ago... yes, it works OK, but I
can't get it to do an update! Updates fine on initial installation though.
And no, it won't be free! It runs out 31st October after which time you
needto register and pay... don't know how much, but it seems for those of us
who are beta-testing it, we get a preferential rate!

I have been using AVG Free for years - no problems. I have not had success
using it with Vista Beta so I use Avast. I have had no problems with Avast
and probably will continue with it while using Beat Vista. I like ''no
problems'' :)

When I first installed Vista, and AVG refused to work, I tried Avast. It
slowed my PC down a fair bit and took an age to boot up! Now I admit my
laptop (which I use as a "test" machine) is only a Celeron 1.5gHz, so I
assume anyone with a top-spec PC wouldn't have this problem!
If the AVG problems are down to Vista compatability, how is it that some
people don't have a problem with it at all??? Crazy!

Maybe UAC is turned off. On my machine, having UAC on, it takes multiple
steps each start to get thru the updates on AVG. Not so on Avast and I have
not experienced any slow down problems and mine is not a top-spec

I wondered why programs worked on one machine and not on another too. Then
somebody posted here that it might be a combination of hardware and other
installed software. This I could buy.
I do not see any ''slow down'' with Vista. I have a Dell XPS Gen5 3.8ghz
with 1 gig of ram. I have very little installed on this machine so it hums
right along.

I just installed the AVG beta cuz that is my fav antivirus. It works. No
blocking at startup anymore. Yeah. It's working great.

AVG has always been my favourite AV too! But, what happens when you go to
AVG control centre and hit "Check for updates"? Does it work? Mine doesn't!
