Avg 8.0 new version

R

Robinb

The new automatic update for SP1 has been released.

Users will recieve it the next time their AVG updates. The update process is
required to run twice - upon the second update a computer restart will be
necessary to complete the update process.

After update the user's AVG should have AVG Version 8.0.130.

Update Notes

1) The update is approx 13-14MB so it could take some time to download on
dial-up connections.
2) The update must be done in 2 steps (run update twice), the second update
will require a computer restart.
3) Fixes and Improvements included in this update:

- Remake of internal communication to eliminate undesired program status
appearance (hibernation, sleep mode, cold restart, ...).
- Display of the system tray icon representing running scan (that can be
paused or stopped from the context menu).
- Added option to ignore the status of a component: the system tray icon
then reports OK status even if a component is in error status.
- New tab added for the rootkit findings in the scan results overview.
- System restore point is created before launching a program update.
- Added new option verifying the ADMIN Server connection in the program's
advanced settings.
- Improved EML file processing including scanning of user mailboxes.
- RAM requirements optimization.
- Improved statistics of detected objects in Email Scanner and resident
Shield.
- New design of the system tray pop-up window, and more information
provided.
- To eliminate AVG collisions with OS, only minimum drivers are installed in
safe mode; then it is possible to launch on-demand scanning from the command
line only, and a new GUI dialog has been added to ease the scan
configuration.
- Added option of restoring a file from the Virus Vault to the original
folder even if the folder has been removed.
- Added option of deleting the Resident Shield and Email Scanner history.
- Improved stability and design of GUI.
- Improved GUI accessibility (using keyboard).
- Fixed problem of GUI compatibility with some screereaders, e.g. JAWS.

Where did you find these update notes; I can find the download now on
the Grisoft website, but no update notes for this version.

from the official beta site forum where i am a beta tester for AVG
unless you are one you will not see this
and also this is for the Pro version- the free version as of right now has
not been updated yet.
I asked there when the update to free version was going to be released and I
have not heard as of yet

I now have the 8.0.130 version, but it says that it was updated at 7:52 AM
this morning when I was not home and the computer was off. ?? Also I did
not have to restart the computer, which I could not since it wasn't even
started. However, there was an update yesterday afternoon which did require
a restart. ?? I do have the icon for the scan now as the scheduled scan
has just started.

i have link scanner running on free and pro versions on xp and vista with no
problems.
I do advise when installing to not install the toolbar.

Yes the Link scanner works (free version XP home) but when I noticed all the
extra internet traffic that was being generated each time a search engine
was used I decided to remove it. I really do not need this heavy handed way
of identifying suspect sites. In fact whilst it is a clever solution it is
the very reverse of "green" I do hope that AVG come up with a more internet
friendly method or abandon the link scanner altogether.

Have a red of the Register article if you have not done so already

Hi
I have just installed AVG 8 free version. The icon has disappeared from the
system tray and in Outlook I'm getting the message:

The add-in C:\Progra~1\AVG\AVG8\avgxch32.dll could not be installed or
loaded. This problem may be resolved by using detect and repair on the help
menu.

Detect & repair has not been able to fix this. Do I download AVG Free 8
again over the top or can i get the dll file from somewhere else and if so
where do i copy it to please? many thanks. davidp.

try reinstalling but do it as a custom install and uncheck the plugin for
Outlook.
Click on the Personal scanner when that part comes up

Robin,

I am having the very same trouble with the same warning. When I try to
download the free version though, it appears to download, but never fully
installs. 5 hours online with MS has not helped and I cannot contact AVG as
this is a free product download...any suggestions?

lisa i am confused
this update below was a while ago
the free version now is .169
and you should be able to download and install it now.
If you cannot go to their website and pick up the free version- it should be
this newest one
uninstall your version first.
then install the latest one

Hi Robin,

MS had me uninstall AVG Free 8.0 last night as I was having trouble with
viewing graphics in my emails. They could not solve my problem and asked me
to reboot, reinstall AVG and they would call me tonight. I tried to
reinstall, but it will not complete the installation process, says MS "has
encountered a problem" and must shut down.

The only options I have in my list are "AVG Free Tray Icon" "AVG Free User
Interface" and "uninstall AVG Free." When I go to "change or remove
programs", click on AVG Free 8.0 and Remove, I get a box that pops up and
says "Installation Failed. " The details say Error: Initialization of the
setup data file "c" failed. Error 0xe001042c.

Then when I try to open Outlook I get a little box that says AVG failed.
Then another box that says, "The add-in "c:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgxch32.dll"
could not be installed or loaded. This problem may be resolved by using
Detect and Repair on the Help menu."

End result - errors every time I try to open or send an email and no virus
protection.

MS said this morning they were experiencing a "significant problem with the
tech call center and they would call me tomorrow." Totally unacceptable, but
nothing you can do.

Your help is appreciated. Sorry this is so long.....

Lisa

also try reinstalling the program but pick "repair"
see if that makes a difference and if there is an option to do it as custom
do that but do not check off the plugin for Office
nor the toolbar
