average size partition needed for VISTA ? tia

I'm not sure how final is the file layout in RC2, but looking at the
"look-but-don't-touch" WinSxS folder I saw that one of the directories takes
300 MB and its /only/ for for Canon printer drivers! I also saw lots of things
I can't believe Microsoft puts there... Copies of movies? I don't need to have
ultra hi-def movies showing me how to adjust the colors on my screen, thank
you.

So I took it upon myself to let my fingers do the looking and tweak the
security settings on WinSxS to try and get rid of some of junk in there, just
to see what would happen. Oh and I'm sure the EULA covers /that/ too, right?

Bottom line, I got rid of tons of junk, including the huge Backup directory and
all the software I have on my Vista RC2 install still works nicely. In total I
got rid of around 2 gb of stuff and the directory still has 2.7 gb of gunk in
it!

I have Vista installed on a 9 GB partition, I have 3.2 GB free with several
apps installed, including Borland's BDS 4, Outlook/Word/Excel 2007 and some
other directory full of stuff. I moved the pagefile to my faster drive. The
minute I need more room, I'll hit the WinSxS directory again. I'll delete
things until I break Vista, then take it a notch back ;)

With all the buzz going on around Vista and how it's all things to all people,
some like me are left off. You know, the kind of person that /knows/ how a
computer works? The guy that thinks that Windows Explorer in XP is a lot more
productive than the one in Vista? Like taking 15 seconds to delete a file due
to those pesky large, cumbersome time remaining "progress" dialog?

If it wasn't for the new memory manager/subsystem making everything I do *a
lot* faster and the search I probably would have deleted Vista a long time ago.

There. That's how big your partition needs to be for Vista! :) And sorry for
the rant!

It's too bad that Microsoft won't release an installer for it's OS like OSX
or Linux, which allow one to not install unneeded software and drivers.
