Using WinXP Professional SP2 on a laptop that is in a "stand-alone"
environment (i.e., not joined to any domain). the pre-dominant network
connection is from a 56K Dial up connection.
The XP did not use to have Automatic-updates turned on. After SP2, I have
experimented with
- Notify me but don't automatically download or install them
- Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them
I noted the following problem
1) System takes much longer to "load up" post logon
2) The install doesn't seem to work with both of the above options
2.1) As I click on the Yellow excalamtion mark icon on system tray, select
Install updates. Regardless of whether the following is chosen
2.1.1) Express install or
2.1.2) Custom install
I get a progress bar that stays saying:
Installation Status
Initializing installation...
Overall progress
[Progress bar is empty]
<cancel>
it stays like this forever (e.g. it is still like this after 5 hours). If
turn off the machine (as in COLD shutdown), then occassionaly, the list of
stuff to be installed will go down.
How do I recitfy this (in light of the fact that this computer use
predominantly dial-up connection)?
