AutoText empty in Headers & Footers

I open a "new" blank document. I can see entries in AutoText under the
Insert Menu

If I select View headers/Footers, I get a blank list box when I select
AutoText.

Any ideas what can cause this? it would be good to know what to avoid in
the future.

The only thing I could do to fix the problem was replace the "normal.dot"
file with one from another machine.

However, that lost the extra toolbars etc., that were displayed.

Is there anything else I can try to fix the problem without replacing the
file. It would be nice to keep the other user settings.

I did try to delete the autotext entries and then copy ones from another
..dot file, but that did not help.
I had to replace the normal.dot file.

Thanks,
Mike.

1. Make sure your text is in Header or Footer style (though if it's not,
there's a good change you'll see a list of *all* AutoText, not an empty
list.

2. Make sure that "All active templates" is selected in the "Look in" box in
Insert | AutoText | AutoText.

3. If the AutoText list in the AutoText dialog is empty when you have "All
active templates" selected, most likely you have saved a document or another
template as Normal.dot. See “WD2002: Styles and AutoText Are Not Copied to
New Template Based on Normal.dot†at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=291441. Remember that only Word can make
a Normal.dot.
