Hi. I thought that Word was supposed to put autotext in the attached
template. So why does my autotext always end up in the normal
template, not the one I have attached?

Also, autotext is supposed to be sorted by the custom style under
which it was created. OK, that works as long as the autotext is
[mistakenly] stored in normal.dot. When I move the autotext to the
attached template, which is where I want it and where the styles are
correctly stored, it loses its link to the style and gets dumped into
a category called 'normal', which I assume is word's normal style and
not where I want it.

So, how do I get my autotext into the right template under the right
style?

Thanks,

Irwin

How are you moving the autotext?

If you move it with the organizer - the paragraph styles are preserved. I
assume the paragraph style in question is in your target template?

Alternatively you can save it directly to the required template (if open)
from the new autotext dialog.

If the cursor is in the normal paragraph style when you call autotext, all
the available paragraph styles are listed. If the cursor is in the required
paragraph style only the autotexts for that style are displayed.

Note that autotext behaviour was changed in Word 2000 to the present.

In order to save AutoText entries in a specific template, you have to change
the "Look in" setting in Tools | AutoText | AutoText from "All active
templates" to the attached template. Once you have done that, then you can
use Alt+F3 to create AutoText entries, and they will be saved in that
template until you change the "Look in" setting again. Note that it is
important to change the "Look in" setting before opening a document based on
a different template, as that would result in *no* AT entries being listed.

Irwin,

To answer your first question: AutoText is saved by default in
normal.dot. For the first AT you create in each session, use the
dialog Insert > AutoText > AutoText instead of the Alt+F3 shortcut,
and set the "Look in" box to your custom template. After that, you can
use either Alt+F3 or the dialog, and your template will remain
selected.

Hello. Thanks for the response. I am afraid I must disagree.

I am using Word 2000. I admit I am not perfect, but I have been having
this problem for a while, and I tested it again before I posted.

I am moving them with the organizer. The styles are in the target. I
copy the autotext from the normal.dot (which happens to be on the
right but that shouldn't matter, right) to the target template on the
left, and then delete them from normal.dot. The paragraph styles are
not preserved. I have tried it several times with my documents and
with some test documents created for this purpose. Are you sure? Can
you confirm on your system that it does work properly?

I always have the cursor in the proper paragraph when I call autotext.
Even so, I would think that autotext would put it in the proper
category named for the style, not in a category called normal which I
did not create and must reflect the normal style from normal.dot after
erroneously stripping the formatting away during the move and
deletion.

I tested this before posting - with Word 2003 - and it works as stated. I do
not have access to Word 2000 to check at present, but my recollection is
that it was the same then.

If this is not working for you, did you see the alternative suggestions made
by Jay and Suzanne?

OK. I am trying this. Seems a little unpredictable, but I will keep
trying.

Now, how do I move the autotext from normal.dot to the target template
without losing the associated style? Although a previous reply said it
should maintain the proper style and thus autotext category, when I
use organizer to move it to the target template (which is where the
styles are actually stored also) it seems to strip that info off and
just dumps them into a autotext category called normal, which it must
have created since I did not do it. Any ideas? Did you test it on your
system, does it really work properly?

Thanks,

Irwin
