Ah, so actually you are abusing the mail system ;-)
Depending on the security settings of the modem/router you can see if you
can ping it or reach another service. Another way to go would be to run
scripts internally to check the health of your servers and mail this to you
like for instance every hour. You then have a full overview AND checked if
the modem worked. If you don't get the e-mail you'll know something is wrong
and if the mail reports an error with one of your servers you'll know that
too and respond accordingly.

loops
(like 2 auto responses only mailing each other).
