AUTOPLAY

Having re-installed windows XP after a drive crash, I keep getting the
'Autoplay' screen about every 30 to 45 seconds. This is most annoying as it
halts the program that is running whilst it searches. Until I had to
re-install XP, this never happened except when I inserted a CD/DVD into one
of the players. I have disabled all (3) of my players, suspecting a possible
problem with one of them may be the cause, but 'Autoplay' still runs.

Any solutions please?

Check the root of your C drive for an autorun.inf file. If found, rename it and
see if the problem disappears.

Hello David,
Thanks for trying, but there is no file by that name in the root of C

If you have TweakUI installed try this:

Open TweakUI, click on My Computer > Autoplay > Drives. Uncheck all system
drives except for your DVD/CD drives and any drives that use removable media.
Click on Apply.

Click on Types to verify that both items are still checked then close TweakUI.

See is that solved the problem.

Hello David,
I have installed TweakUI and carried out the changes you suggested. At first
I thought it had worked, but after about a minute Autoplay ran again. I have
now unchecked all drives - HDD and Removable ones - this seems to have
stopped Autoplay from running randomly, although I cannot now autorun any
CD/DVD. This is not too much of a problem, as I can still access the CD/DVD
manually and run the programs manually.
At least I don't tear my hair out waiting for the annoying hang-up whilst
Autorun is messing about.
I will keep trying other things within TwaekUI and hopefully will get the
result I am looking for.

Thanks for all your invaluable assistance with this.

You're welcome....and thanks for the feedback!

FWIW, many users prefer to have the autorun disabled on the CD\DVD drives, for
various reasons.

Having TweakUI installed gives you a tool that you can use to isolate which
drive is triggering the autoplay.

If you find that it's not a hardware issue, you may want to be sure that your
system is free from any malware or virus.

Good luck!

Hello David,
So far so good. I turned Autoplay back on for my three CD/DVD players and
all was well. I then turned it on for my Zip and it all went back to square
one, so I turned off the Zip Autoplay and it stabilised again. So, thanks to
your assistance and a process of elimination, I have got the problem solved.
I don't really use the zip drive much now, as most of my friends have now got
DVD re-writers etc. so I only use it for odds and sodds.

Thanks again.

Glad to hear that you were able to zero-in on the offending device.

Come to think of it, I too have one of those ZIP drives on my system and I don't
think I've actually used it in the last two years. I think it may be time for me
to take a thorough inventory of system's software and hardware again and
evaluate what I really need to keep.

Take care.
