Autoplay rarely ever plays DVD's.

Inserting a DVD movie usually does nothing but flash the disc icon 2 or 3
times. CD's play w/o any prob.

I've minimal success in playing a DVD by rebooting and re-setting the
autoplay for my preferred player, but as soon as I eject the played DVD and
either try reinserting the same DVD or another one, nothing except the
flashed disc icon happens.

Believing that known issues with the Windows "autoplay" was most likely the
cause for my issue, I first used the MS Windows Autofix.exe (autoplay wizard
tells me the Wizard cannot fix the problem), checked for known registry
issues (finding none), and then used TweakUI to scan for unidentified
registry problems (none reported).

Of course I tried reinstalling the drive's drivers, even reinstalling my
player. Still DVD's aren't even recognized as being inserted (re My
Computer). As a last resort, uninstalled HighMAT CD Writing Wizard. Still
no joy.

As it's not likely I have any maliciousness going on, i.e.; no viruses or
spyware detected (religiously updated, frequently scanning w/NIS 2005 AV,
SpyBot S&D, ewido, TrendMicro's AS, Bazooka's scanner, MS AntiSpyware Beta,
MS's Malicious Software tool, and even Kaspersky's on-line scanner), I'm left
only now to suspect either SP2 and/or perhaps HighMAT CD Writing Wizard (if
not simply MS Windows as well) has irrepairably bunked my 9 month old
(relatively sheltered and babied) OS.

And no, my Mfgr says no updates for player's decoder or the optical drive's
drivers.

Because I was having some incidents w/my AV and AS being shut down, a few
unexplained crashes, and I have this weird thing where Notepad won't produce
a quote mark many times until I type another (and then two appear), and as
recently my start>programs list frequently is showing "empty", as such I was
leaning towards malware as a likely suspect.

But unless I can find someone really good at analyzing HJT logs, I'm wary of
getting nasty with the registry. But what the heck, maybe someone knows a
real expert and will point me in that direction. Nothing else to try for
this OS.

Otherwise it's back to formatting, rebuilding my OS (and re-formatting again
once I discover what's bunking autoplay) to discover what to avoid.

Any real savvy suggestions appreciated.

Hi and thanks for the reply,

As whenever (once in a blue moon) I can get a DVD to play, I'm assumng that
the decoder for Intervideo WinDVD 5 was/is functioning and/or isn't corrupt.

MS's Windows XP Video Decoder Utility check indicates some details, but as
no use help or use guide fot the little thing, little to no clues as to how
to use the tool.

It shows...

('Alert icon') for "Intervideo Video Decoder", file named "ivivideo.ax",
version 5.0.11.210, ('X' icon) for "MCE compatable"

('X' icon) for "GPL MPEG-1/2 Decoder", file named "GplMpgDec.ax", version
0.1.2.0, ('X' icon) for "MCE compatable"

('x' icon) for "Sonic MPEG Video Decoder", file named "SonicMPEGVideo.DLL",
version 2.5.4.1050, ('X' icon) for "MCE compatable"

As to why the only the first one is afforded the use of both buttons ("Set
as deferred" and "Check for update"), again no clue because the last two are
disafforded the use of any buttons except for the "Set as deferred" (of
course all three decoders also have the utility pop-up window option buttons
for Restore Defaults" and "Close").

Guess I need to post aomewhere to try and find this utility's use notes.
