Go to http://search.microsoft.com. Search for "Autoplay Repair Wizard".
Might help.

Thanks.
Sorted it out though I can't say for sure how because when I installed the
fix you mentioned it appeared not to work. The drive still wasn't playing cds
straight off. Tinkered with Drive Properties/Autoplay quite a bit for both
the cd rom and the cdrw.
Hopes this helps others with similar problems.

Hi all,

Well, well,well!!
It was the Roxio software that was the culprit afterall.
Here is what I did to get back the autoplay.(The little cd icon that flashes
above the pointer after a disc is put in the drive, is now restored.)
I uninstalled the Easy cd creator (add /remove programs), then went looking
for anything remotely related to Roxio and removed these as well. I removed
the Adaptec folder contents (found in Programs Files) and then went to
Common Files (still in program files) and deleted everything in the Adaptec
Shared folder. I then uninstalled the drivers for the CD-ROM I was having
problems with and shut down the machine. Opened it up and disconnected the
CD-ROM completely. Started it up and reinstalled Easy cd using the
burner.(This way when the Roxio looks for supported hardware during the
install it would only see the burner and not get the chance to affect the
CD-ROM drive)
Shut down again and reconnected the CD-ROM. Windows detects it and installs
the drivers. Then went to properties of the drive found autoplay and used the
"restore defaults" button for music cds, videos, music files etc.( By the
way, you have to click "apply" everytime you select one of these).
So far everything is working fine. Quite pleased with myself. :).

Kelly, I've been having the same auto play problem. I can get cd/dvd to run
if I go into "my computer" highlight D drive and get it to work from there.
All the tests I've done say the D & E drives are working fine. The computer
is not a year old and this problem has only arisen since we downloaded the XP
service pack 2. Tried using Auto repair tool you mentioned but no luck, any
other suggestions
