Autorun Changes Not Permanent, Can't Update Windows

I have Windows XP Professional which I just installed on a new machine of
mine. I am finding some peculiar habits of this machine.

First off, I can't update Windows. The windows update website gives me error
message 0x800A138F.

Also, I have noticed that after I changed autorun of the CD-ROM to 0, it has
reset back to 1 after I reboot.

Meanwhile, I've been trying to execute msoobe in the winnt/system32/oobe
directory, and it doesn't do anything. No error messages, but it won't do
anything.

And yes, I am the administrator.

What's going on here?

I tried it all. It STILL won't permanently save the changes to autorun. It
keeps going back to 1 after rebooting.

I can get windows update to run, but the autorun thing just will NOT stay
permanently.

Hi,

If you are unable to play the CD's automatically whenever
you insert the CD in the CD-ROM, then make sure that you
have following settings for the drive:

a) Double-click on the My Computer icon.
b) Select the CD-ROM drive and right-click on it.
c) Select Properties.
d) Click on Auto Play tab.
e) In that make sure that the option "Prompt me each time
to choose an option" is selected.

Note: When you select this option you will get options to
choose what to do with each type of file like picture
files, music files etc.

f) Once you select that option click on Apply and OK.

If you don't have auto play tab then take these steps to
get that option.

Note: The Registry contains critical information. You
should always "Backup the Registry" before making any
changes:

A. Click on Start
B. Click on Run
C. In the "Open" box type REGEDIT
D. Click OK
E. Click on "Registry" in the menu
F. Click on "Export Registry" from the drop down menu this
will open a new box
G. Click on the down arrow beside "Save In" and
select "Local Disk (C:)"
H. In the File Name box type BACKUP.REG
I. Verify that under the "Export Range", that the radio
button is beside "All"
J. Click on Save

Now, edit the registry to restore the Autorun option:

1. Click Start, select Run, and type regedit in the
command line.
2. Locate the following registry key:

HKEY_USERS\Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentcersio
n\policies\Explorer

3. Select the NoDriveTypeAutoRun key.
4. Right-click on the key and select modify.
5. Set the value Data to 91 and select base as Hexa-
decimal instead of Decimal.
6. Click OK.

After modifying the key the value for the key should
appear as 0x00000091(145).

If you do not find the key or unable to modify then delete
it completely and recreate it again by taking these steps:

1. Click Start, select Run, and type regedit in the
command line.
2. Locate the following registry key:

HKEY_USERS\Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentcersio
n\policies\Explorer

3. On the right pane of the Window right-click and select
new, DWordValue option.
4. Rename the key as "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" and then modify
the key by setting value data as 91 and base as Hexa-
Decimal.
5. Click Ok.

After modifying the registry you will get the Autoplay tab
and you can set options according to your preference.
