Autoplay Auto Play fails to run

I go to properties of a removable drive. In Auto play it is set to
take an action always when a card with pictures is inserted. It does
not do that. It does nothing.
In fact, even when I insert a D with an auto run install it does
nothing. I do have autoplay on CD enabled and I have been having no
luck at all with autoplay. I am running XP-Pro SP2. This happened also
in SP1. Any ideas?
 
I was told to search within Microsoft.com and outside of their website for a
small fix called: Auto_CD_fix.exe that fixes the problem. I was stomped as
to WHY it stopped working -- I do not have SP2 installed, so it's a widely
known issue.
