Autonumber and date???

I would like a sequential quotation number in a document
to automatically update when starting a new quote. The
document file would be named with the same quotation
number. If the document is opened and saved at a later
date, I don't want the number to be updated. Should I
somehow link this task to the file name or is there a
better way?
