Automatically save an attachment ?

M

Mark Flynn

Is there a way to automatically save an attachment to a directory (folder)
on the local hard drive? Then the user could delete the email message
without having to go through the routine of saving the attachment manually.
The idea here is to reduce the space required on the Exchange server's hard
drive by Outlook users who don't delete their messages.
(This question will reveal my ignorance) but, can you configure the Outlook
client to "automatically delete the message from the server" after, say, 5
days? Just like you can with IMO accounts?
Thanks, Mark Flynn

1) there are 3rd party utilities you can use to delete attachments or write
some vba. some are listed here,
http://www.slipstick.com/addins/housekeeping.htm - vba samples are at
outlookcode.com
2) Exchange doesn't work like pop accounts - you can't delete from server
after xx days. How large are the users mailboxes?

Hi Diane:
Thanks for your reply.
I believe that 10 mb is reserved on the server, per user.

I have, and have read, Sue Mosher's book "The MS Outlook 2000 Email & Fax
Guide"

Thanks again, Mark Flynn

Hi Diane:
#2 - Downloading mail from the server was another idea (theory?) I had - so,
you can't download mail from Exchange Server into the Inbox on the local
hard drive? (like a POP account) thus preventing space on the Exchange
Server's hard drive from filling up ?

Thanks, Mark Flynn

you can use rules to move messages to a pst or set a pst as the default but
it tends to defeat the purpose of using Exchange - and if you use a pst as
default, you loose the ability to share folders with others.

FWIW, 10 megs is awfully small for a mailbox - hard drive space is cheap and
keeping the mail on the server is better for a lot reasons - from backing it
up to accessing it from other locations (using owa). It also takes less
space on the server, especially if several people are receiving copies of
the same messages and attachments. Mail in a pst can take twice as much
space...
