How often does the automatic update service check for new updates? And
is there anyway to change the frequency that it checks?

Yes there is way to check the frequency at which it checks:
Start | Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | System | Automatic
Updates tab.

Every time you start Windows.

It has to be more frequently than that, since I start windows about once
a month, and updates appear anyway. Of course, I connect by ISDN, so
maybe it's 'every time I go on-line' .. not sure what that would mean
for a broadband user though.

Well I'm gonna have this XP Pro computer behind a Linux firewall/router
so I'll setup something to monitor it on the firewall and then post the
answer.

My Debian Linux and FreeBSD machines download updates every morning
about about 3 AM. It would be nice to be able to schedule the XP machine
to do the same thing.
