Automatic Updates service marked for deletion.

I have a perplexing issue.

One of our faculty members has a laptop with XP Home on it. She brought it
in because it was acting funny. I discovered that it was infested with the
Spybot virus. I was able to remove the virus successfully. After upgrading
the AV client on her system and making sure it was clean, I installed SP2
onto the system.

The installation went fine, and there were no errors. However, I am unable
to get the Automatic Updates to work. The Security Center reports that the
Auto Update function is disabled, but if I go to the Updates control panel,
it shows that it is turned on, and set to check everyday. If I look in the
Services MMC, it shows that the Automatic Updates service is running, but
that it's startup is set to "Disabled". If I try to change this to
"Automatic" as it should be, I get a message that "The service is marked for
deletion."

How can I fix this? It is the only problem the system has at this point.

Thanks for any help.

Could the following scenario have happened?

Unfortuneately no. This seemed to occur right after I installed XP SP2. I
installed the SP in safe mode to make sure nothing was running.

Thanks for the information though.

Often, one of two problems is happening when you get that message.

You have run an install, and have not restarted.

Or, the registry entry for the service is missing. You might reset the entry
by taking the system to the Windows Update site, and running a scan.

No I haven't. Because the system was a priority and thankfully her data was
all on a server, we just re-Ghosted the system with an up-to-date software
load. It was a quicker solution.
