Automatic Updates Properties unavailable

I was testing SUS with my laptop (Win XP Pro SP1) and
decided that I did not want to use SUS. I removed SUS
from the server that I had it installed on but now when I
go to look at the automatic updates properties under
system propertied all of the options are grayed out?

I go into the registry and make changes to the AU
settings, per article 328010, and the changes take place
on the AU properties but they are still grayed out.

I am not using group policy.

I can go to Windowsupdate and download updates without
any issue.

Thanks.

I fixed my problem.

Although I was not using group policy I launched group
policy locally on my laptop with gpedit. I right clicked
on admin templates and added wuau template. Even though
all the options were not configured I turned on the
configure auto updates and the specify intranet MS update
service location. Once I turned them both on I then set
them both to not configured.

After that automatic updates properties were able to be
modified.
