I'm aware that Automatic Updates must be enabled (recommended), but in case
they are disabled, a pop-up balloon keeps advising that they are disabled,
how do i stop this message??

Control Panel, Security Center, Change how the Security Center Alerts me
(left hand side). I don't use automatic updates. Normally updates come out
once a month, on the second Tuesday (patch Tuesday). I go to the Microsoft
Update site and do a Custom scan to see what is being offered, decide which
ones I want, then download them individually. I keep a copy on CD, and
install manually one at a time testing after each one to make sure the
system is running. I reboot immediately when it asks to reboot. I also
image my system regularly so if an update hoses the system (hasn't yet), and
system restore or an uninstall of it doesn't work, then I can restore the
image.

Don't get hardware driver updates from the update site, unless it's a MS
product. Driver updates should only come from the device manufacturer, the
computer OEM web site if it's a major OEM, or the motherboard manufacturer's
site if it's an on board device. Drivers need only be updated if there is a
problem or the new driver has some must have feature. Don't upgrade drivers
just to have the latest if it's otherwise working fine.

If you choose to use Automatic updates at least set it to alert you to new
updates but not install. That will give you a chance to see what they are
and decide which ones you want.

Thanks for the tip. By the way, talking about automatic updates, a friend has
problem, he updated his WinXP , his configurations are download and install
automatically, so he actually didn't know what he was installing, anyway, in
the updates was the geniune validator (WGA i think), so when he restarted the
PC after the updates install, he got frustrated when a warning about NOT
GENUINE went on the screen , and the only way he could remove it was using
System Restore to a point previous the update.
I don´t want to have the same problem, and is a good thing to have updated
software, so..is there a way to automatically download all the updates
available, and select just the ones i'd like to install on my PC?? (I have in
mind NOT to install WGA).... or if i use Automatic updates, I MUST install
all the downloaded updates???

Go to Control Panel > Automatic Updates > Choose the option "Download updates
for me, but let me choose when to install".

Maybe your friend should get a legal copy of XP? If his is legal there are
some troubleshooting steps he can follow.
After updates are installed you can always go to the update site and see
what has been installed.

I don't use automatic updates so I can't say for sure but I believe you
don't have a choice.

In my opinion there is nothing really wrong with WGA though many others
object to it, and I can appreciate their arguments. You don't have to
install the component that checks back with MS regularly. (If it already
has been installed there is a small utility available to remove it.) Just
download the validation tool and once it's validated you're all set. Of
course if your copy is not legit then that's a different story.

Yes. After downloading the updates, it will give you two options "Express"
and "Custom". Choose Custom and then you will be able to choose which updates
you want to install.
