Automatic Updates - endless update loop

Hello,

Windows XP , SP2

When downloading the updates for windows XP all seems fine. I then
manually (or automaticly) install them. The install seems to go fine, but
upon final reboot , the updates are not installed and the process starts anew.

I set it to auto update at 3am just as a test. So it downloads the updates
(13 of them... my lucky number) then i shut down. It goes through the
process of installing them all and then shuts down.

Start the machine up... nope sorry no updates installed (no error messages)

Any hints? This isnt a problem that lends itself to the KB as i cant reall
come up with a good search phrase, i tried.

Start by narrowing it down. Install one update at a time, until (assuming
any of them work) you find the one that is causing the problems. The repost
and tell us which update is failing.

Also, have you checked the event logs for clues?

Good luck!

Hi thanks for the suggestions.

Honestly im not sure how to check the logs.

Im in the process of trying to figure out how to install updates one at a
time right now...i've never done it that way before i just always let windows
do it itself.

Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer
(You may need to switch to the "Classic View" of the Control Panel)

If you are using the Windows Update web site, just deselect all but one at a
time.

Hi Troy
Depends where and how you searched?
Which set of updates are they - Oct/Sept? or do the 13 include other stuff.
For countless methods to get downloads installed, please check the
windowsupdate group - I believe there is one in that web interface
discussion group that you are using.
If you search within that group, you should find many methods of getting the
updates to install etc.
Over the last three to four months, not any one method has worked for
everybody - it has become a trial and error process which seems to be
compounded each subsequent Black Tuesday - and alas another will be here on
Nov 14.
From a personal perspective, I feel it too big a risk these days to have MS
auto download and install ALL updates.
One should choose to be 'notified' and then 'pick a time to install'.
In the WU Home page after MS searches your system, you will offered the
choice of Express or Custom.
Choose Custom for the important security/criticals. Print the list on offer
or make a note of them and go into MS Download Search, enter the KB number,
search and select the update for your system.
It is your choice to download directly and install or save to disk or
desktop or C:\ drive.
You can do this on-line with AV and Firewalls disabled if you wish - but I
would certainly disable when then it comes to installing.
Prepare your system as well re scanning foe virus, spyware, malware etc with
what you have already and outside scanners.
The above is a long way round, but in the end some have had to do it this
way.
If you wish to try step by step, let us know
