Automatic Update Mucks Up Computer

The latest automatic update stops my computer from working so i have to
system restore if it installs again. Why's it do this? Anyone else having the
same problem?
 
I think everybody else is having this and other problems.

I have already spent two weeks trying to get Vista to a level where I can
normally use it.
 
Which update would that be? Windows, AV, etc?

My most recent Vista update is Oct 4 for Windows Defender Definition.

No problems.
 
It's the two before the Windows Defender, i can't get on the computer to
check just now though. Windows Vista Premium
 
Windows Update asks for the installation of an update for Windows Update
before any other updates can take place. I haven't been able to install this
update, the system hangs up or gives me error 80073715.

I have put a support request to Microsoft and the first action suggested by
them has not worked.
