automatic ip

i cant obtain an ip automaticaly when using my network card to connect to the
internet, yet if i use a USB ethernet adapter it works. both their settings
are the same but the adapter has more options. 1 which is set to auto but i
think it goes to 'half duplex' when enabled/connected.
my net card has 3 propertys. link speed/duplex mode: auto
network address
: not present
receive buffersize
: 64K
adapter has several. Flow control, rx size, tx packets, link status wake up,
magic packet, media type, test mode and WOL supported.

any ideas
i also find it pretty slow at trying to connect to alot of ip address, even
if im only using less than half of my band width. :(
