I am running xp pro on a single PC with Outlook Express
as my email program. Is it possible to set it up so that
I receive an automatic notification when new emails
arrive rather than have to open Outlook and select Send?
receive every time?

Yes, the options for this capability are in Outlook Express under
Tools/Options/General Tab. Look in the Send/Receive section.

I've already done that but it doesn't appear to make any
difference. Shouldn't it still work even though the
program isn't open?

No, the program needs to be running for it to work properly.
