Automatic downloads of Windows security patches

I want my Win XP computer to automatically check for Windows security
patches and other updates, and download them if available. How do I
set this up? Another question: Suppose my computer is not turned on at
the nominal time of the downloads. Question: How do I make darn sure
that the downloads will take place, perhaps at the next time I boot
up? Also, how can I make darn sure that I KNOW that the downloads have
taken place?
