I upgraded my computers to SP3. One of them is now systematically rebooting
, a certain time after shut down.
What's the reason and how can I get rid of that
Thanks for quick help
Fernand

If you have an HP computer with an AMD processor then read the articles
below:

Error message after you upgrade a computer that uses a processor other than
an Intel processor to Windows XP Service Pack 2 or to Windows XP Service
Pack 3: "STOP: 0x0000007E"

This is the patch to fix the above issue "For non-Intel processors"
***Must be applied before installing SP3***

Turn off auto restart.

Right-Click My Computer/Properties /Advanced/System and Recovery
Click on the 'Settings' tab.
Under System Failure, uncheck Automatically Restart.

You should now be able to see the BSOD error message on the next reboot.
Post what you can of this message.

I did what you said, unchecked the automatic restart, rebooted: no error
message, after the shotdown the pc restarted 2-3 minutes later

This phenomina happended after installing SP3 from CD, after SP3 update
failure. Should I uninstall SP3?

Before you uninstall SP3,
go into Device Manager and see if anything (drivers in particular)
in the list has a yellow question mark.

While it should have no connection with SP3, some BIOS contain settings that
will awake a computer (I believe AWAKE is part of the setting name) when
certain events occur. I would check through the BIOS entries just to make
sure that this is not set before you start uninstalling SP3 and doing a
bunch of troubleshooting.

The BIOS doesn't have an awake setting.
What is strange is that it happendend after a Windows update asking for SP3.
There was a falut at the end (I translate from french: Bad connection of a
device. But the decice manager didn't show any problem. On recommendation by
MS I copied from there site the whole SP3, burnt and installed it. But the
boot, 2-3 min after shutdown was still there. In fact it's the only problem,
because all functions run under SP3.
PS: I just unplugged the Internet cable, and the PC didn't restart himself.
Do you have an idea?

Fernand

Yes, it was set. I turned it off and since there was no automatic start.
Sorry Ron, I didn't see it when I checked for it following your
recommandation
But why? I never changed BIOS settings since I bought this computer. Could
the install of SP3 either changed BIOS settings (I doubt) or the LAN
behaviour ? I want to understand
Many thanks for all of you
Fernand

I can see no relationship between SP3 and the BIOS setting and that's why my
earlier post was worded as it was. However, it was fairly clear to me that
the BIOS setting was responsible for the machine being started. How the
BIOS change occurred--not a clue other than "stuff" happens. :-)

Any way,
many thanks
I was so focused on SP3 especially after the lot of bad saying in some
forums
