Hi all,
does WinXP provide a way to automate "Defrag"? One possibility to do
that is to create an script and schedule it for being executed at a certain
time but, in a computer running 24x7, the desired way should be to run
defrag in background mode when the resources load is low or when
there's no HDD requests from applications. I know that there are some
commercial products that performs that, but I'd like something provided
by WinXP itself ... or free???

Thanks,
Marc Soleda

Create a Scheduled Task for any program, then open the Properties and
overwrite the command-line for one for DEFRAG. Help with this
command-line tool is available with
DEFRAG /?
from a DOS prompt.

Yes but, AFAIK, it's not optimized and defrag will run at the scheduled time
even the cpu and hdd are permorming other tasks so the computer will be
overloaded.

Have a look at the settings tab after right-clicking the task > properties
in Scheduled Tasks
Check the "Only start the task if the computer has been idle...." option

Also you may wish to schedule it for times when you are less likely to be
using the computer eg 3 am

Marc.

If you really want to do as you suggest, I would tell you to go buy the Full
version of the Windows XP defrag program. A company named 'Executive
Software' wrote the original program and Microsoft uses a small piece of the
program. The programs is named 'Diskeeper Professional Edition Ver 9" (most
recent). I think it sell for about $50.00 (can not find receipt), and it
will do everything you want it to do and do it faster. Check out the 'Set
It and Forget It' feature, the 'Smart Scheduling', and my favorite
'Boot-Time Defragmentation'. This program ROCKS. (www.executive.com)

What you want is "only" available from 3rd party software. That is how they
make their money - by making their software better than that supplied with
the operating system!

I'm trying to do it in that way as it reaches my needs but one thing that I'd
like to bypass is that when the task is executed the cmd window is showed.
How can I execute the task in background mode or almost minimized?
I've looked for a flag/switch that could do that but I haven't found it.

Thanks,
