Is it possible to force the Read-only option for new documents created from a
template which is, itself, password-protected against modification, so that
the dialogue box does not appear, asking for the password ? I am using Word
2000.

When you go into the Open File dialog box, click (once) to select the fle,
then click the arrow on the right edge of the Open button & select Open
Read-Only.

HTH :>)

I'm creating the new document from my templates folder from ,File> <New>.
Opening as read-only doesn't appear to be an option here.
Any further clues ?

No, not "really".

When you create New from Template, you have an unsaved document which must
be editable in order for the user to Save it.

You can open it "Protected" for Forms, allowing the user only to enter data
in the unprotected fields, but you can't open the entire new document
read-only.

You can store the template as Read Only on the file server (you should do
this in any case, to prevent users changing the template). But you do not
protect the Template for Editing. That enables users to create a new copy
each time they want to use the template.

Hope this helps

Worked a treat - thanks very much.
For safety, I have made the network folder, containing the workgroup
templates, read-only to everybody else.
