AUTOFORMAT-DOUBLE LINE

When I hold down the equals key then press return, Word auto formats this to a double line, no problem with that. However, at a later date/time when I try to remove that double line or turn it back into equal signs, I can't do it. Is there a way to delete the double line that is created or at least select it?
