AutoFormat? AutoReplace?

Whenever I type repeated underline characters (__) and press <ENTER> Word creates a heavy line. This line canNOT be deleted in any of the normal (intuitive) ways. Ever. No matter what. In fact, sometimes the line propagates itself when you try to delete it. I can't find where this option is set - it appears to be some autoformat feature. It could be a footnote separator line I guess, but I'm not using footnotes either. I would like to understand what this is and, more importantly, how to turn this feature OFF (forever!)
