stop autoformatting of long lines

I often use a 10x_ [underline] in a Word document to indicate omitted text.
However, I recently gave the autoformat command and found all of those
10-character lines turned to lines clear across the page! I don't want that,
but I can't figure out what autoformat command does that, and I can't even
select the new lines to erase them! I would appreciate assistance with this.
Thanks!
