Autocomplete combo box

[Learning Excel]

On the question made by Stremetzky and answered by T. Valko about how to do
an autocomplete dropdown list ( 5 or 6 questions down ) I follow the steps
and is perfect, very nice. However when started writing last names (my list)
if there is more than one, then right away goes to autocomplete the first in
the list.
ej... Smith, joe
Smithson, earl
Snearson, al
When I put the " S", right away autocomplete the first one "Smith, joe"
This behavior is different than the autocomplete in regular excel worksheet.
In other words I'like to write the "S" and nothing should come until all
other last names stating with "S" are ruled out.
Can that behavior be change to the regular one ? How?
If I'm asking for too much please it's ok to let me know.

Not sure what you're wanting to do, but...

In the properties of the combo box>MatchEntry there are 3 different options
to choose from. Try changing those options and see if any of them do what
you want.

None of them is for my needs.
Basically if I have a lot of last names starting with letter "S" as the
previous post
then when I write the letter "S" in my combo box I would expect either :
1- a dropdown of all " S" last names in order to choose from them or
2- none, until I keep writting and get specifically to one with no other macth
( is what happens in regular worksheet without combo box).
My best guess is that the feature is not availabe.
If I dropdown in a website, lets say looking for artist and I write
"D" it will give me all artists starting with the letter "D" to choose from.
I know is different, but isn't there the same concept of lookup.
Please get me out of my confusion, or just tell me "can't be done in excel"
either way I'll be gratefull for the learning experience. THANKS.

About the only thing I can suggest is that you use a letter designation to
group the names. This of course would require that the source list of names
be sorted. Like this:

A
Adams
Albert
Allison
B
Baker
Beeman
Brown
C
Carlson
Clark
Cutter

Now, when you type in C the list automatically takes you to the beginning of
the C's. The autocomplete will still work as you type more letters.

Yes it is a good idea to do A,B,C (counting the limitations). I guess I'm
expecting a lot from excell and probably I need to go in the web designing
session. Maybe excel 2007 bring more surprises. Anyways thanks a lot T. Valko
