Amit

My Windows XP home edition on the laptop does not boot
properly for the past 3 days.
On boot up, it gives this message:

Autochk program not found - Skipping AUTOCHECK.EXE

I did not do anything specific apart from resgular windows
updates. Now, i can mostly boot only in safe mode except
in last known good configuration.

Pls help.

Alright...I am not entirely sure, but I think this
program is located on the XP cd. I have been having
problems installing XP, and have had to run chkdsk
several times. Chkdsk is a program which tries to recover
corrupt information from the hard drive. The only reason
I mention this is because when I go to run chkdsk, it
says something to the effect that chkdsk needs autochk to
run properly, and that file is located on the XP cd. So,
what you can do is get your installation cd, boot into
safe mode and copy the autochk.exe file from the cd to
the C:/WINDOWS/system32 folder. I am not sure if this
will work, but it is worth a shot! P.S. This file
should also be located in the
C:/WINDOWS/ServicePackFiles/i386 folder, though I would
not mess with that one. If that file is missing, I am
not sure what you should do.
