auto updates

why would auto updates work sometimes and not others? using Win XP with SP2.
have ran across a couple machines that have downloaded the updates but not
installed them. also I don't SEE that they've been downloaded and are ready
to install until I log in as admin. have checked the auto update settings
and all are set at download AND install. any clues??

Some of the updates install after a reboot.
