Auto updates wont progress

Win xp advises me that there are updates waiting to be
installed but the auto update windows freezes and won't
progress. When I download the updates from the windows
update site the updates download but wont install.

Help please?

Do two things.
Open C: drive. Look for a folder WUtemp, and delete anything in it.

Then go to Program Files\WindowsUpdate and delete the contents of this
folder.
Then access the Windows Update site directly.
