Auto Update

I

Irwin Lentchner

Been running MSAS for a month with no problems until
today. It did not do an auto scan as scheduled this
morning at 3:30am. Also when I try to update I get the
message that it could not connect to the internet. My
cable connection is working. I spent 1/2 hour checking
all settings & trying to update numerous times. Same
message each time. Until I noticed that sometime during
that 1/2 hour it did update (by itself in the
background?). I am now updated to definition 5699 but
none of my manual updates worked & they still don't. Any
ideas?

I don't have a recipe to make that error message go away.

I think I can theorize about what happened, though:

I suspect that in your case, autoupdate may actually be working--or working
sometimes. There's an appearance bug where even after a successful
autoupdate, the version number as specified both in the autoupdate result,
and in Help, About--will be incorrect. If you do a manual update which in
fact doesn't do any update (as evidenced by the dialogs)--the version number
will be corrected. So--just trying the manual update, even with the error
message displayed, may have corrected the definition version displayed.

Here's a link to a KB article about how to reliably discern the version
number of the definitions actually in place:

We have one report that setting your proxy settings to "automatically
detect" on the Internet connection, may help with this message. I don't
have any confirmation--this may well work if you are behind an ISA firewall
installation, but this isn't the norm for many users.
