Auto-Update won't install an Update

My pastor asked me to help him update his PC which has XP Home SP1. He
bought it recently new with bunches of software on it. He has never ran a
Windows Update. When it logs on his ISP, the little Globe saying updates
are available shows up next to clock. Well I click Start|All
Programs|Windows Update. It goes to the MS website and searches for latest
software for the Windows Updater. It runs a little then tells me there is
an error retrieving an update file. I then can't get SP2 or any updates.
He signs on with Administrative Rights but it doesn't ask for password or
say in User Accounts that he is password protected as it does on mine. I
have same OS and no problems installing SP2.

Any help or suggestions out there?

Is there a way I can Download XP SP2 to a Thumb drive then install from it
to his PC in light of the aforementioned problem?
