Auto run on ppt files

Hi,

Windows 2000 professional (sp4)
PowerPoint XP (version 10.6501.6626 sp3)

Something has gone wrong!

Last week my PowerPoint presentations, .ppt and .pps files, somehow
became un-associated with PowerPoint.

When I double clicked them it said OPEN WITH…

So I selected PowerPoint and clicked ALWAYS USE THIS PROGRAM

What should happen is that when I double click on the .pps files the
presentations should just run and when I double click on the .ppt files
the PowerPoint editor should open.

BUT

All that happens now is that both .pps and .ppt files just runs!

I cannot get into the editor to modify any presentations.

The workaround I am using is to open PowerPoint and select FILE | OPEN
and navigate to the directory where the file is and open it that way.

But I would like to go back to the original way of just double clicking
the appropriate file and having it open in the editor.

Both the .pps and the .ppt files have the same icon. I don't know how
significant that is.

I have just installed the SaveSelection.ppa file from Bill D
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00548.htm

However I don't think this has anything to do with it, bit I'm not
totally sure.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

I don't know what caused it, but I know how to fix it.

Open Windows Explorer, click on Tools > Folder Options > File Types.
Locate and highlight .PPT. Click on the Advanced button. If you don't see the
Advanced button, click on the Restore button and it will change to Advanced.
Now, see the list under Actions? I'll bet that Show is in bold type. Highlight
"Open" and then click on the Set Default button. That should cause the word
Open to be in bold type. Okay your way out and try clicking on a .PPT file. It
should now open PowerPoint in Normal mode.

Thanks for the info but there was no PPT option.

So I clicked NEW and made one, and configured it as you recommended.

All is perfect in my world, well my PowerPoint world anyway.

Thank you.

There is no option for PPS either but it seems to run anyway.

Should I create a PPS option or just leave well alone?

Thanks again.

PS
Off topic but,

Should I top post of bottom post in newsgroups?

It's strange that you didn't find the file extensions at all. Something wiped
them out. Yes, I would set up .PPS as well.

We aren't picky here about top or bottom. As you can see, I top post just out
of habit I guess. Well, no I guess it's for practical reasons too. I read all
posts, so when I read a reply, I don't need to see the original post in most
cases, so a reply at the top is faster for me and I don't have to scroll down
for it. But no one here will complain about top vs. bottom and if they do, no
one will listen. <G>

Thanks for the excellent service.

I can continue to make my lesson preparations before the new school year
starts.
