I have both emailed myself pps and posted it to a yahoo group file and
when downloading from either location the extension gets changed to
ppt. Below is MS ecxplaination but their solution but requires making
changes with the server. Is there anything I can do from my own
computer? Will this happen to everyone I email this to or just those
with MS Office?

PowerPoint Show (*.pps) file copies as a PowerPoint (.ppt) file from an
IIS Web server

SYMPTOMS
When you try to download a PowerPoint Show (.pps) file from an Internet
Information Server (IIS) server, you may receive a PowerPoint
Presentation (.ppt) file instead of a .pps file.

NOTE: This problem only occurs on computers that have Microsoft Office
installed.

CAUSE
This problem can occur because there is no registered Multipurpose
Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) type for .pps files on either the IIS
server or on the client computer. Because PowerPoint SlideShow (*.pps)
files are associated with PowerPoint only by their file name extension,
and not a separate MIME type, Microsoft Internet Explorer processes the
file as a standard PowerPoint (*.ppt) file. Therefore, you are prompted
with a .ppt extension when you save the file instead of a .pps
extension.

WORKAROUND
To correct this problem, create a new MIME type on the IIS server that
is specific for .pps files. To do this: 1. In IIS Administrative
Console snap-in, right-click the specific Web server where the .pps
file is located, and then click Properties.
2. Click the HTTP Headers tab.
3. Click the File Types button.
4. Click New Type.
5. In the Extension box, type .pps, and then in the Content type (MIME)
box, type application/vnd.ms-pps.
6. Click OK, and then restart IIS.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft
products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Emailing a file doesn't ordinarily drag it through a web server, unless you use
web-based email, so it' won't happen to everyone you email the PPS to.

You want to be certain that it really IS a PPS though.

Windows by default hides the file extension (the .PPS part) from you.

If you haven't taken a large Gettaclue stick and beaten that out of it, it'll
let you rename YourFile to YourFile.PPS but since the .PPT part was hidden, you
get YourFile.PPS.PPT ... you think it's a PPS but Windows Knows Better.

Find Gettaclue sticks here:

One workaround would be to change the program that opens .ppt files from
PowerPoint (the program) to the PowerPoint Viewer. You can still edit those
files by first opening PowerPoint (the program) and opening that file from
within PowerPoint.

What I'm wondering about is the MS page I included said some MIME was
missing at both with the server and the user. I do send the pps via
online yahoo email and yahoo groups. MS suggests adding the MIME at
the server (which I can't do) but what about at the user's computer?
If so any idea how to do this?

That's fine for your own system, but OP's worried about what happens when the
files are emailed to others.

I was hoping to pass along the fix to the others as well. Anyone know
this workaround?

Did you read my other suggestion?

It's possible that there's no real problem, other than Windows' idiot default
settings.

Yes, I remarked that I actually was using a web based email (Yahoo). I
didn't mention it but yes, it is a pps and when I email it or download
it via yahoo groups then right click and check properties it says it's
a pp presentation and not show and goes right into the pp editor when I
open it.

This explains more about how the browser opens PPT files:

But it's not something I'd ask anyone to plow through and act upon.

It might be simpler to post a link to a ZIPped version of the PPS file instead and if
need be, explain how to unzip files.

I didn't want to open them in IE but the link you provided also had
addition helpful links. Thanks Steve!
