If you're not connected to an Exchange server, you won't have the Out of
Office Assistant.. Define "won't allow data entry". Exactly what are you
trying and exactly what happens?

I am trying to set up an "Auto response" but not having any luck, I have
tried the "Help" and not seen the answer . . . Thank you for your response .

Are you on a network with an Exchange server? The Out-of-Office Assistant
is only available if you are connecting via Exchange. You can configure
Outlook to sort of simulate this activity by using Rules and leaving your
internet connection active and your Outlook running. Details can be found
here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311107

However you should realize that spammers often use auto-responders/replies
to their spam to "confirm" your email address, so doing this could increase
the amount of spam you are getting. If you are not connected to an Exchange
server and instead are trying to do this using your ISP email, you should
contact your ISP to see if they can perform an automated Away message, and
if so if they do so AFTER mail has gone through their spam filter.

Thank you Joe, ok I understand now what the problem is and will have to
reconsider whether I want to use this feature based on "spam" which I hade
not considered, thank you for your input . . . Dominic

If you go to Tools -> Email Accounts, then View or Change Existing Accounts,
it will list your email accounts. If it's just an ISP mail account it will
likely be listed as POP3/SMTP. An Exchange account will say Microsoft
Exchange.
