Auto Logon Problem

I have a recent problem logging on automatically. I have used Tweak UI to
enable the autologon feature but when the system boots it hangs up on
"Windows Starting". I need to reboot and press the F2 key to get back to the
desktop. If I then check the " users must enter a password..." the system
will reboot but I get the welcome screen which is what I am trying to bypass.
Any suggestions?

By any chance are you running Windows XP Home Edition? You may
have set TweakUI up to log on with the built-in Adminstrator
account. You can only log on as Adminstrator in Safe Mode if
you have XP Home Edition.

Instead of using TweakUI, try the following procedure:

Go to Start -> Run.
Copy and paste the following into the Open box:

control userpasswords2

Click OK.
In the "Users of this computer" box, click on the User you want
to have logged on automatically.
Uncheck "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer".
Click OK.
In the box that pops up, make sure the account you clicked on
earlier is entered next to User Name.
Enter your password twice.
Note: You can leave the password box blank if the account does
not have a password.
Click OK.
Reboot to see if you get the desired results.

Good luck

Thanks for the tip.
Yes, it is the Home edition.
The account I am using is the USER account which is part of the
administrators group.

I tried your suggestion but without success.

I did notice that the "Reset Password" button is grayed out for this account
only so I cannot reset it.

Let's get the easy stuff out of the way first. The "Reset
Password" button being inactive is normal behavior. It
disappears whenever you select the currently logged on account
from the list. I don't know why this happens. I suspect it may
be due to the fact that the preferred method of changing
passwords is by running the User Account applet in Control
Panel.

Back to your logon problem, have you tried setting up automatic
logon with another account? If the "USER" account is the only
one present on your system, you might want to try the
following:

Create a new account, solely for test purposes, call it USER2.
Make sure that USER2 is a member of the administrators group.
Logon with this new account.
Using TweakUI, setup automatic logon for this account.
Reboot and see if it works or you get the same results as you
got with the USER account.

Note: Keep in mind that if you get logged on with the USER2
account. It's a simple procedure to go to Start -> Log off and
log on with your USER account.

If you're able to setup automatic logging on with USER2, I'd
suspect that the user profile for the USER account has been
corrupted somehow. If you find that you can't setup automatic
logon with either account then I'd lean towards a problem
within Windows that may be solved by first running System File
Checker (Start -> Run -> sfc /scannow). If that doesn't help,
you may have to perform a repair installation.
