i would like to be able to automatically setup a footer EVERYTIME a new word
file is started...does anyone know if this can be done, and how?

Add a footer to a template, and use that template whenever you need that
kind of footer.

In theory, you can modify the default global template, normal.dot
(normal.dotm if you are using Word 2007), but it is not recommended to make
(big) changes to that template.

Create a document template with the footer and use that template as a basis
for new documents. Add a link to that template to the desktop.
