Auto.exe error message

can anyone tell me what is up with my comp? i keep getting this message everytime i try to install softwear or when my antivirus trys to update.

"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The System file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

and for some reason i carnt find that file eather. :(
