auto-complete email address

New to Vista windows mail. Really hate some of the changes, especially the
email address showing on address line--but will make do. Can't find a
solution to: We have the option for auto complete when starting the email
address, and mine is checked, but the function doesn't work. Anyone have a
clue?

In order to make it work you must do two things. The first your have
already done and that is to check the auto-complete box. The second is to
actually send an email from your address book rather than just typing it in.
It turns out that the auto complete works only on entries that have been
sent at least once from the address book. You do this by clicking on the
"to" box next to the address. When the address book comes up you just
select the one you want.
The next time you send mail the auto complete will work on that address but
not on any other address, even though it is in the address book. I hope
this will help you.

Regards..... Jerry

The auto complete function doesn't use the contacts list. Instead, it uses
a
separate list of the last 29 addresses you sent messages to. This list is
very
hard to edit; it's easier just to send messages to the 29 addresses you want
on the list.

If you'd rather use the contacts list, start a new message as usual, except
don't type any part of the address. Instead, click on To:.

Thanks so much Jerry--that helps. I don't know why they had to "fix"
something that was working so well. The email extensions and the
auto-complete were such a nice feature. I hope they get enough complaints to
change them back for the better.

P.S. I believe it also works after you "reply" to the sender. This computer
is less than a week old, and I've only used a few of the addresses since I
complied my list for this unit.

Thanks again!

The auto-complete in Windows Mail just doesn't work correctly.

This is one of the features that works properly in the newer Windows Live
Mail.

They've stopped issuing updates for Windows Mail, so it's more likely
they won't. You may want to try the newer email program they are
putting most of their email effort toward, since it already has better
address completion.

Although the description emphasizes mail providers that Windows Mail
refuses to connect to, it can also take over any accounts that Windows
Mail can handle.

I would love to try it Dave, but with all the bugs I've had to work through
in the past 4 days, I'm hesitant to try any more upgrades or changes. Good
example of a major problem--I've used Norton for years with no problems and
it took me 6 trys to get the new version installed on my new laptop. I really
had buyers regret for a while. Also, every thing I delete even from the C
drive is back the next time I log on. Talk about control. But the little
things drive the nuts! I hate the address extension after the email name! LOL

Thanks everyone,

As another 'selling' point, Windows Live Mail does not show the
email addresses.

True--a good feature, but you have to be a premium Yahoo member to download
it. So in reality, it's not "free."

Excuse me? Windows Live Mail is totally free to download
and use. If you have a free Yahoo webmail-only account, you can
continue to access that by pointing your browser to http://mail.yahoo.com.
WLM won't stop you from doing that.
