auto archive doesn't remove mail from inbox

Outlook 2003, Win XP.

I am using auto archive to remove items older than 3 months
from my inbox and sent items. The archive is created with
all the mail prior to 3 months.

However, my inbox continues to also have all the mail that
was archived. It's as if auto archive is making a copy
rather than actually moving the mail. The sent items seems
to have been successfully moved.

Help?

Have you recently viewed the items? If yes, then you have changed the modified date. Outlook uses the modified date for archiving. Add the modified date to the columns in your inbox, then sort by this column to see what I am saying.

So, if it didn't remove the email because the modified date
had been changed, does it still move this same (modified
date changed) email to the archive?

It shouldn't. Items whose Modified dates are more recent than the archive
interval you specified should be skipped.

Thanks - it's beginning to make sense for the first time
since I started trying to archive outlook files, probably
with 98 or maybe it was even 95
