Authentication to local domain controller not working when wan link is down

I have XP machines authenticating to an AD domain with a local domain
controller on site, the problem is if the Wan link to the Corp. network goes
down they start having problem with e-mail (witch is local) also with opening
files and with login scripts witch are all local.

Any suggestions?

The clients need more than just a Domain Controller to authenticate.

For starters, they need to be able to find the domain controller, which
requires DNS.
Is the local server providing DNS?

Next, is the DC also a Gobal Catalog?
If it's not, then if a remote GC is not contactable, users will be unable to
log on.

Google for "FSMO roles" and "Global Catalog" for an explanation of this.
